The Sign
A silhouette type sign featuring three main themes: A tractor representing agriculture, the countryside with the ash tree in the centre and the towerless church of St Mary. It commemorates the Millennium of AD 2000 as shown at the top of the sign.

The Name and Population
The population was 219 at the 2011 census. Known as Assefelda in 1086 and Esfeld in 1198. The name means "The open land where ash trees grow", from Old English. The suffix of Thorpe is Old Norse meaning " Secondary settlement"

Other Points of Interest
Another church is also in the parish, Thorpe St Peter, where the remains of a round tower now stand in private grounds.
