Bardwell
The Sign
The sign has two sides with different themes, dominated by Sir William Bardwell (Berdewell). The side with the village name on shows the arms of the Berdewell family. On the reverse side the theme is dominated by Sir William de Bredewell on his horse in full armour and bearing his family shield with the leaping goat. In the background are the church of St Peter and St Paul, the Blackbourne River in the bottom left and the windmill which still stands and is now a private dwelling.
The Name and Population
