Barnby

Old sign included North Cove on reverse

Present sign

The Sign
The sign is quite simple, showing the east window of Barnby St John the Baptist church, which is located to the east of the village. The original sign also included North Cove on the reverse side. The original sign was erected in 1977 to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee and was made by Lowestoft College.

The Name and Population
The population of the village was 479 at the 2011 census. Known as Barnebei or Barneby in 1086 and Barneby in 1254. Probably means "The farmstead of the children" from Old Scandinavian. Other places in England with the same name could be a personal name, Barni or Bjarni for the first element.

Other Points of Interest
The church has a banner stave locker, common in this area, but the door is still intact, which is quite rare in this country.
