Barsham

The Sign
The sign is quite unique with the sun sitting on top of an oak tree with what looks like arms. It actually looks like a scarecrow. It did actually cause some grief with the locals and was vandalised when it was first erected. The village name is difficult to see as it is carved down the trunk. The intention of the sign was to represent the two solitices with the back side being mainly red on the outside. Both sides are now gold which defeats the object. The sign was designed and made by Keith Payne and erected in 1981. The sign is located on the Beccles to Bungay Road, B1062.

The Name and Population
A small linear village with a population of 215 at the 2011 census. Called Barsham or Bersham in 1086. The name means "The homestead of a man called Bar", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to Holy Trinity. It has been shown that on a date in September (Equinox), weather permitting, the sun shines through the upper window in the round tower directly on to the figure of Christ on the Rood.

Horatio Nelsons mother Catherine Suckling was born in the Rectory next to the church in May 1725.

The Barsham Medieval Faire was held here between 1972-76. It may have been instigated by Keith Payne the make of the village sign.
