Bucklesham

The Sign
The sign shows a date of 1983, which is the year it was erected. The top portion of the sign represents agriculture through time with a modern tractor crossing the field and a Suffolk Punch horse and scythe representing methods from the past. The lower portion shows the church of St Mary and some trees representing local woodland. The sign was once painted, but was black in this photo; maybe worn off!

The Name and Population
The population was 526 at the 2011 census. It was called Buclesham / Bukelesham in the Domesday Book. The name means "Buccel's homestead/village", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest

The village gave its name to HMS Bucklesham, a Ham-class minesweeper. The bell off of HMS Bucklesham can be found inside the village primary school.

Basil Brown, archaeologist and astronomer who in 1939 discovered and excavated a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo, later made into a film, the "Dig".
