Bures

The Sign
The village sign is located in Essex but represents the village of Bures that spans both counties. Close to this sign is another representing Bures Hamlet, which is on the Essex side; Bures St Mary is on the Suffolk side. The sign is made of wrought iron and only shows the village name and the reason for erection which was to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977

The Name and Population
The population was 1,433 at the 2011 census. It was called Bura or Bure in the Domesday Book. The name simply means "Cottages" from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
The River Stour separates both halves of the village, with the church dedicated to St Mary located on the Suffolk side.
