Butley

The Sign
The sign is quite simple depicting daffodils that can be found around the village and nearby Staverton Park. The sign is situated close to the Oyster Inn Pub.

The Name and Population
The village was called Butelea in 1086 and Buttele in 1195. The name has two possible meanings, both from Old English: "The wood clearing of a man called Butta" or "The clearing with tree trunks or logs". The population at the 2011 census was 383 which includes Chillesden and Wantisden

Other Points of Interest
Butley Priory was founded in 1171 and dissolved in 1538.

Butley was once famous for its oysters, hence the pub name.
