Capel St Andrew
The Sign
The sign is located at a crossroads by the side of the barn at Home Farm on Church Road. The sign was commissioned by the Parish Council to commemorate the Millennium. Paul Richardson designed and made the sculpture. The main figure is St Andrew who was a fisherman and recognised by the halo and saltire cross. He is holding an eel and a fishing net. The demolished church can be seen at his feet on the left, with a black deer appearing from around the back. The tree at the back represents the nearby Rendlesham Forest.
The Name and Population
The village name was called Capeles in 1086 and Capele in 1316. The name is derived from Middle English (Old French) meaning "The place at the chapel"; St Andrew is from the dedication of the lost church. There were 77 people recorded at the 2001 census.
Other Points of Interest
The church was demolished in the early to mid 16th century.
