Clopton

The Sign
A simple village sign with the name in the centre surrounded by plant tendrils with leaves at the end. A poppy is mounted on the top. The sign is made of wrought iron and is located on the B1078 at the junction with Manor Road. The name is in gold on a blue background probably representing the colours of St Mary, the dedication of the church in the parish.

The Name and Population
Called Clop(e)tuna in 1086 and Clopton in 1186. It means 'The farmstead or estate by or on a hill(s) from Old English. The population was 375 at the 2011 census. There is no defined centre to the village, with houses concentrated around the four manors of Kingshall, Brendhall, Rousehall and Wascolies.
