Dennington

The Sign
The village sign stands close to the church of St Mary which is depicted on the sign, flanked by trees. It was made by Harry Moore a local and erected in 1988. Coats of arms above and below unknown, but could relate to the Bardolph family!

The Name and Population
Called Dingifetuna/Dingiuetona in 1086 and Dingieueton in 1169. The name means "The farmstead or estate of a woman called Denegifu", one of four Suffolk places named from Anglo-Saxon females. The population was 578 in 2011.

Other Points of Interest
The church of St Mary has many interesting bench ends, with a unique Sciapod on the face of one end of a pew. This a man with a large foot used to protect him from the sun like an umbrella.

The post office here was one of the oldest in the country, listed as only one of six in 1856 in the official postal guide.

Another village located on the Suffolk Tourist Route.

Ed Sheeran bought several properties in Dennington and now resides here.
