Dunwich

The Sign
The sign is made of wrought iron depicting a medieval merchant ship on a calm sea! This represents the great port that it was in its day. At the base of the sign is an imprint of the ancient seal of the town, which is similar to sign itself.

The Name and Population
The name means either "Trading centre at the dunes" or "trading centre at Domnoc", from Old English. The population was 183 at the 2011 census, which may include part of Westleton.

Other Points of Interest
The village is steeped in history due to it being a major port in England prior to 1286, when a massive storm surge hit the coast and destroyed a lot of the town, being followed by two more storms the next year. The village had at least thirteen churches and was the main trading port of the country.
