Grundisburgh


The Sign
The village sign was made locally in 1992 and show the arms of Bertram Gurdon, 2nd Baron Cranworth was the son of the Hon. Robert Brampton Gurdon, who was killed in action in Libya in July 1942, and whose family seat is Grundisburgh Hall. The sign sits on the green in front of the church.

The Name and Population
The village is reasonably large with a population of 1,584 in 2011. It was called Grundesburc(h) in 1086 and Grundesburg in 1235. The name means "Stronghold near the foundation of a building or 'Grund's stronghold", from Old English.

The church is dedicated to St Mary

Bartholomew Gosnold (1571–1607), explorer and colonist instrumental in the settlement of Virginia, and namer of Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod, was born in Grundisburgh.
