Hargrave

The Sign
A simple sign depicting a hare in a grove, which some say represents the village name! Made from cast aluminium. It was designed and painted by Brian Gaze. Harry Stebbing of the Village Sign People created the frame with wrought iron ‘C’ scrolls and made and finished the bespoke English oak post.

The Name and Population
The population was 310 at the 2011 census. It was called Haragraua in 1086 and Haregraue in 1150. The name probably means "The hoar or grey wood/copse" from Old English. But alternatively it could mean "The wood frequented by hares" if the first element means hara, a hare. The village website suggests 'The Anglo Saxon form of the name HARGRAVE is Haran-grafa with Haran meaning "hare" and grafa meaning grave or trench'.  The Hargrave Village Sign was erected on The Green on Saturday July 19th 1986 after taking some time raising the funds.
