The Sign
The present sign was erected in 1988, replacing an older one just showing the village name. It was designed by and David Pratt and made by Mr. N. Kerridge at Blake's Engineering in Melton. The sign shows a farmer ploughing the field with two horses in the traditional manner. It seems as though the backdrop is the underside of a mushroom not the setting sun. The worlds largest mushroom was apparently attributed to the village at the time and recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. A mushroom is also shown at the top of the sign. Birds can be seen at the top of the sign following the plough for their next meal.
The Name and Population
The population was 402 at the 2011 census. It was called Hasc(h)etuna / Hashetuna in the Domesday Book. The name means "Haseca's farm or settlement", from Old English.
