Henstead

The Sign
The sign was erected in 2004 on the B1127 Beccles Road at the junction with Toad Row, tucked away in the hedge. The four quarters show stylised images of the church of St Mary, the rising sun, the sea or the nearby River Hundred and a ploughed field. A very rural and spread out community. The sign is made of cast metal, designed by Sally Lazzari. The base was constructed by Don Glanfield using a post from a former Hulver Gate pub sign.

The Name and Population
The population of the parish, which includes Hulver was 408 at the 2011 census. The name literally means "Hen place" from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
The church of St Mary (pictured below) is of Norman age with a spectacular Norman doorway inside the south porch. The nave and chancel still retain a thatched roof. The churchyard is split by the B1127, in a circular shape that suggests Pagan origin. Inside the church there is an alcove that was once used as the banner stave locker and is prevalent in other churches of this area of Suffolk.
