Herringswell

The Sign
The village sign is a rebus of the village name with two herrings suspended inside a well shaped frame. It stands outside the church of St Ethelbert. The sign was erected in 2000 to celebrate the Millennium

The Name and Population
The population was 290 at the 2011 census. Known as Herni(n)gawella / Hyrningwella in 1086. The name means "Spring/stream at the corner of land' or 'by the horn-shaped hill", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
The Church is memorable for its outstanding series of stained glass windows with the latest being installed in 1992 by Ivona Mayes-Smith and illustrates the theme “Herringswell in Spring”depicting snowdrops and daffodils and her Spaniel 'Tiffany'.
