Holton St Mary
The Sign
A plaque on the post reads "given in memory of Patrick King and erected by Holton St.Mary Parish Council in the year of the Queen’s Jubilee, 2002". The sign is double sided with the same theme on both, showing two villagers shaking hands by one of the village trees! The roundel is made of ceramic tiles inside a wrought iron frame.
The Name and Population
The population was estimated at 220 at the 2005 census. It was called Holetuna in the Domesday Book. The name means "farm/settlement of a man called Hola; or perhaps 'by a hollow" from Old English; St Mary added later.
Other Points of Interest
It was the birthplace of the 13 times British flat racing Champion Jockey, Nat Flatman in early Victorian times.
The stained glass evangelists of the O'Connors either side of the sanctuary in the church of St Mary are said to be some of Suffolk's best.
