Mellis

The Sign
The sign is a simple welcome sign including the name and the symbol of St Mary the Virgin at the top, which represents the local church. It was erected by the Parish Council to celebrate the Millennium.

The Name and Population
The population was 519 at the 2011 census. It was called Melle(l)s or Metles in 1086. The name means "Mills", from myln, meaning a mill in Old English.
