Middleton

The Sign
The sign was created by Jessica Costello, who lived at Vine Cottage in Middleton village during the late 70's and early 80's. The design references a story about the church weathercock as it apparently vanished one night and never found, hence the stance of the cock walking away. On the other side of the sign is the church of Holy Trinity's tower standing above the red roofed houses of the village. There was once a bell on the sign post which references the local pub, the Bell Inn. The sign is unusual being made of small tiles in a mosaic style, one of only two signs like this in Suffolk; the other is at Cretingham.

The Name and Population
The village had a population of 343 at the 2011 census, 16 less than at the 2001 census. It was known as Middeltuna or Mi(l)detuna in the Domesday Book. The name means "Middle farm or settlement" from Old English.

Other Points of Interest

The village was united with Forley in 1620; the church of Fordley was in the same churchyard as Middleton, but has long disappeared.
