Moulton
The Sign
The sign is wrought iron and features the grade II* Pack Horse bridge which spans the River Kennett. Just about wide enough for a cart it is now used only by pedestrians. A concrete ford now allows cars to cross the stream to the church. The fish represents the church of St Peter, with an unusual weathervane on the church which takes the form of a large pike. The “WI” represents the Women’s Institute who donated the sign for the 1977 Queen's Silver Jubilee. The sign is located outside the village hall.
The Name and Population
The population of the village was 1,033 at the 2011 census. The village was known as Muletuna (tona) in 1086. The name means "Mulas or Mules farm/settlement" from Old English.
Other Points of Interest
The church weathervane was made by Charles Poulter. The church was heavily restored in 1851.
The Pack Horse bridge is one of two still surviving in Suffolk, the other in the neighbouring town of Kentford.
