Newbourne

The Sign
The sign was made by Mary Moore and T.W. Pearce, located at the junction of Mill Road, Ipswich Road and The Street. The sign is split into two halves, above and below the name. The fruit and vegetables on the village name represent a prosperous market gardening industry in the area. Above the name is the 16th century Fox Inn village pub, a telephone box and the church of St Mary. Below the name is a Suffolk Punch horse and foal standing opposite the village hall.

The Name and Population
The village was called Nebrunna or Neubrunna in 1086. The name means "New Stream" from Old English. It had a population of 304, which included Hemley, at the 2011 census.

Other Points of Interest
Newbourne was one of the areas involved in the 'Land Settlement Association' schemes set up in 1934 and its legacy can be seen in commercial greenhouses, plant nurseries and roadside produce stalls remaining in the village and local area
