Recent sign - August 2022

The Sign
The sign was first erected 1980 and located at the side of the road on the A134 next to the golf course. The sign has the name above a wooden panel which depicts many activities of the village including: the sports of football, cricket and golf, the country pursuit of fox hunting (one horse and rider is missing from the new sign), agriculture, old and new with the tractor and traditional plough. The church stands in the top right hand corner. Sheep and and a horse are at the bottom, with a black sack marked CWT! Below the main frame are nine coats of arms which I assume belong to local families.

The Name and Population
The population was 495 at the 2011 census. It was known as Niwetuna, Neuuetona in the Domesday Book. The name means "The new farmstead or settlement", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to All Saints.

Unusually, the village green to the south and west has been converted to a 9-hole common land course in 1907. It is one of the oldest golf clubs in Suffolk. Residents are entitled to membership of the local golf club, though are limited to using the holes on the village green and cannot use the clubhouse. The green is also a wildlife site.
