Old Newton
The Sign
The sign has a Suffolk Punch horse above the name and bridge across the River Gipping below with a sword and axe dated 870 AD which represents the Battle of Stonebridge between the Danes and the Saxons on the outskirts of Old Newton. The plaque states that it was presented by the local Women's Institute to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their foundation in 1989. The sign is made of wrought iron.
The Name and Population
The population in 2018 was 809 in the built up area. It was called Newetuna or Newetona in 1086 and Neweton in 1196 and Eldneuton in 1418. The name means " The new farmstead or settlement", from Old English, the 'old' coming later around 1418 .
