Pettistree

The Sign
The sign is surmounted by the Prince of Wales’s feathers and a crown, with the date 29th July 1981, marking the Royal marriage. A team of Suffolk Punches drawing a plough across a grassy field with the church of St Peter and St Paul in the background. Immediately below on the post in his own plaque is St Peter holding the key to the Pearly Gates.  With the coming of Missionaries from Rome, the tree was dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, later, a church and parish was established and St Peter's Tree became Pettistree. The sign was made by the Brandeston Forge.

The Name and Population
The population was 194 at the 2011 census. The name means "Peohtred's tree or Peter's tree" from Old English in part. Parts of Pettistree (Bing) are mentioned in the Doomsday Book, although this was the Ancient village. It is thought that the present village was a later development and was established due to a shifting population after one of the plagues attacked the Ancient village.

Other Points of Interest

The Church of St Peter and St Paul was built in the Thirteenth Century- the original font's base as well as the Grisaille Glass remains.

Before Christianity arrived in Pettistree, it is believed that people worshipped an ancient tree which was sacred to Odin.
