Santon Downham

The Sign
A completely new sign was unveiled in October 2022 to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, made by Norfolk blacksmiths Thomas B. Bonnett and funded by the parish council and the community budget of Cllr Wittam and Suffolk county councillor Victor Lukaniuk, who also represents Brandon at district and town level. The sign depicts the church of St Mary and trees with deer representing the forest of Thetford and the Brecklands. There is also a flock of swifts flying by the church tower. The sign is topped with a golden crown. It is located at the corner of the village green, close to the village hall.

The Name and Population
The population was 237 at the 2011 census. The name means "A hill village near an enclosure on sandy soil", from Old English. Called Santuna in the Domesday Book.
