Sapiston

The Sign
The sign was erected in 1993 as shown on the post. The wooden gate may represent the village hurdle-maker which were needed during the height of the wool trade in medieval times.

The Name and Population
The population was 178 at the 2011 census. It was called Sapestuna in the Domesday Book. The name has uncertain origins, but could mean "The village of soapmakers".

Other Points of Interest
This sleepy part of Suffolk proved to be an ideal filming location for the 1970s British TV show Dad's Army. In common with much of the surrounding area, Sapiston and Honington were used for part of the series, in particular the episode "Dads Army Things that go Bump in the Night.

The church is dedicated to St Andrew.
