Shottisham

The Sign
The sign was made by MCR Engineering and painted by Jean Clarke. The sign depicts the church of St Margaret in the background and the old mill (now a private residence) by Shottisham creek in front, both encompassed in a ring of corn stalks and daises representing the countryside.

The Name and Population
The population was 197 at the 2011 census. It was called Scotesham in 1086, Schatesham in 1254 and Shettisham in 1313. The name probably means "The homestead or estate of a man called Sceot", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
The millpond, fed from springs rising near Church Lane and others to the north, is now much reduced in size. When milling stopped in the 1950s, it was completely filled in; then partly re-dug in the 1980s. During the later period of operation, water power was supplemented by steam power. The mill was last used commercially in 1944, and the engine is now in the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket. To the right of the mill is the miller's cottage.
