Stonham Aspal
The Sign
The sign was designed by Ian Macro and made by Rod Richens and installed in 1981, commemorating the royal wedding of Charles and Diana.
The sign represents the church tower of St Mary and St Lambert with a ring of ten bells that are housed in the tower.
The Name and Population
The population was 601 at the 2011 census. It was called Stonham in1035-44 and Stanham in 1086. The name means "Stony ground homestead or village", the suffix coming from de Aspale family, specifically Roger de Aspale.
Other Points of Interest
The dedication of St Lambert is taken from the Lambert family, owners of the manor, not the saint; it was used to distinguish it from other Stonhams in the area.
The original ring of bells was five, but extended to ten in 1742 by the keen bellringer, Squire Ecclestone of Crowfield. This gave some space problems, as the belfry could not accommodate the extra bells. His solution was to lop off the top of the tower, and replace the stone walls, which are a couple of feet thick, with thin wooden ones.
