Beacon Pennant

Present sign - side 2

The Sign
The sign was made by Country Craft Studio of Lawshall and first erected in 1986, made of wood; it has since been replaced with a more durable material. The sign is double sided with a village cricket match in front of the church and displaying buttercups in the foreground. The reverse side also shows the church with its many trees in the background and a part ploughed field and ears of wheat in the foreground representing agriculture. There is also a pile of bricks made locally, possibly from Woolpit which is the main material for the church. There is a small plaque on the post showing Stowupland being the best kept village in 1988 for Mid Suffolk. It has also won many other best kept village awards over the years.

A beacon pennant was also erected in 2018 showing one side of the main village sign on both sides.

The Name and Population
The population was 1,988 at the 2011 census. It was called Sow Uplande in 1524. It means "The higher land at Stow (market)", from Middle English.
