Stutton
The Sign
A plaque on the post records that the design, by Felicity Dean, is intended to show the village’s close association with the river and with Alton Water. The sign was presented to the village by the Stutton Community Centre committee and unveiled, at the side of the B1080 road opposite the Kings Head inn, in July 1981. The church is represented on the left and a water mill with its water wheel on the right. Is Alton Water represented at the top?
The Name and Population
The population was 812 at the 2011 census. It was called Stot(t)una in 1086. The name could mean "hillock farm/settlement". The first element could alternatively mean 'gnat' or 'bullock, mainly from Old English, but the Bullock is Old Norse.
Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Peter and lies about a mile from the village centre.
