The Sign
The sign is made of painted cast metal and erected in 2002.
On top of the sign is a wheatsheaf and an old wooden plough representing agriculture in the area. There are three panels within a shield shape:
Top - Church of All Saints with its offset tower.
Bottom left - The old post ill which stood north of The Street.
Bottom right - Heraldic arms of Suffolk with the lion rampant and cinque port ships.
The Name and Population
The population was 648 at the 2011 census. It was called Torn(e)duna in 1086 and Thorndune c.1095. It means "The hill where thorn-trees grow", from Old English.
Other Points of Interest
All Saints Church was built in 1358; it lies to the east of the village. The font is a piece of 15th century stone carving from the Hawes workshop in Occold. It's decorated with 'grinning' lions and angels.
