Thorpeness

The Sign
The sign is located in front of the meare and was donated by the local golf club in 1990. The sign shows two prominent features, The House in the Clouds, once a water tower, which can be seen for miles and a postmill from 1803. Both are close to each other and still standing.

The Name and Population
A part of the Aldringham cum Thorpe parish with a population of 759 at the 2011 census combined. Called Torp in 1086 and Thorp in 1275. Thorp means "An outlying farmstead or hamlet, dependant on a secondary settlement" from Old Scandinavian. The suffix "ness" is from Old English, meaning a "promontory or headland".

Other Points of Interest
The village was turned into a holiday destination "Seaside Garden Suburb" by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie in the 1920's. A luxurious private "Holiday Camp".

The church here is now a private residence.
