Thurston
The Sign
There are two identical signs in Thurston, one outside the church and the other outside the railway station. The one near the church was erected in 1978 celebrating the Queen's Silver Jubilee, albeit a little late. The sign depicts the 'Thedwastre Oak' or 'Theodward's tree', where elders of the Thedwastre Hundred once met. The arms of the Drury family are shown at the top of the post. The signs were made by Neil Horne at H Signs.
The Name and Population
The village is large with a population of 3,232 at the 2011 census. It was called Thurs or Torstuna in 1086. The name means "Thori's farm or settlement" from Old Norse and Old English.
Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Peter.
