Walpole
The Sign
The sign was erected in 1995 and has three simple themes. At the top is a wheatsheaf representing local agriculture, in the centre is the church of St Mary with its tall spire and at the bottom is the old bridge across the River Blyth, which lies close to the sign.
The Name and Population
The population was 238 at the 2011 census. The village was called Walepola in the Domesday Book. The name means "The pool of the Britons", from Anglian and Old English.
Other Points of Interest
A very nice Congregational Chapel can be found on the road out of Walpole, which still looks like it is frozen in time inside from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is now in Trust.
