Wattisham

The Sign
The sign was erected in 2000 to celebrate the Millennium. The sign is dominated by the shield of the Wachesham family who had changed their name from 'de Ipstone' in the 13th century, to the then name of the village. The sign is located close to the church.

The Name and Population
The village had a population of 110 at the 2011 census. The name means "Waecci's homestead or village", from Old English. It was called Wecesham in the Domesday Book.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Nicholas and is now looked after by a charitable trust.

The village houses an airfield. Formerly known as RAF Wattisham, it was one of the front-line airfields in the Cold War. The RAF moved out in March 1993 and it is now the largest Army Air Corps airfield in the United Kingdom. The airbase is now named Wattisham Airfield.
