Weston

The Sign
The sign is located on the A145 at the junction with the church that is only a couple of hundred yards away. The sign was completely funded and made by the parishioners and erected in 2001.

The frame of the sign represents one of the church windows with the church itself in the centre. At the bottom is the Hundred River which flows nearby. Top left is a royal crown which could represent Queen Elizabeth I when she visited the Hall and reputedly shot a deer from an upstairs window using a bow and arrow, or it could represent King's Lane. Top right shows a fighter plane, a General Dynamics F-16a Fighting Falcon from USAF Bentwaters which crashed in the village on 4th May 1982. Below the church chancel are the keys of St Peter church and to the bottom right is a Cromwellian helmet, where this part of the country were in support of the Parliamentarians; Cromwell Road is also in the village.

The Name and Population
Known as Westuna in 1086 and Weston in 1212. The name means "The west farmstead or estate", from Old English. The population was estimated at 230 at the 2005 census.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Peter and contains one of the thirteen Seven Sacrament Fonts to be found in Suffolk. The font stands over six feet above the floor of the church on a Maltese cross. A series of 15th century carved bench ends and the remnants of three 16th century wall paintings also remain within the church, which also features a rare example of the Royal Arms of James II.

The Fighter plane was written off 4/5/1982 when crashed three miles south of Beccles, Suffolk, England, due to main fuel pump failure. The aircraft had just undergone major maintainence and was being flown for a post-maintainence test flight. The pilot ejected safely. The aircraft clipped a tree during its crash, and landed in a field adjacent to the A145 at London Road, Weston, Beccles, south of St. Peter's Church. The 429th TFS was on temporary detachment to RAF Bentwaters, Suffolk, UK, on a "Coronet Wrangler" deployment, to take part in exercise "Elder Forest".
