The Sign
The sign is made of wrought iron and has the arms of the Wingfield family on the left showing three sets of angel wings and the three coronets of Bury Abbey on the right who owned most of the land before the Reformation.

The Name and Population
The population was 345 at the 2011 census. It was called Wighefelda / Wineberga in the Domesday Book. The name means "Open land of Wiga's people or of the temple folk", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Andrew and built by Thomas Wingfield for his college of priests in the 14th century.

Wingfield Castle, which is now a private house, was for many centuries the home of the Wingfield family and their heirs, the De La Poles, Earls and Dukes of Suffolk. The Wingfields were a very ancient family and Sir John de Wingfield was chief of staff to the Black Prince.
