Worlington

The Sign
The sign was presented by Worlington Women's Institute to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 1977, as recorded by a plaque at the top of the post. The sign depicts a man guiding a horse towing a barge along the River Lark which was once navigable up to Bury St Edmunds, in the opposite direction it was the route by which good Suffolk barley was transported to the brewery at Ely. The backdrop represents the countryside and probably agriculture with the ploughed field.

The Name and Population
The population was 526 at the 2011 census. It was called Wirilintona in the Domesday Book. The name means "Farm/settlement associated with the Lark'. Cf. Wordwell", taken from Old English.
