Wortham

The Sign
The sign was erected in 2001 with the base representing the ruined round tower of Wortham St Mary church. The tower is the widest of all the round towers in East Anglia. The top represents the old gateway to the village school.

The Name and Population
The population was 722 at the 2011 census. It was called Wrtham c.946 and Wortham or Word(h)am in the Domesday Book. It means "The homestead or village with an enclosure", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
St Mary's church has some wonderful bench end carvings.

Robert Cobbold the writer of 'The Biography of a Victorian Village' and the story of 'Margaret Catchpole' resided here from 1825-1877.
