Belstead

The Sign
The village sign is located outside the village hall and was erected in May 2000 to commemorate the Millennium, unveiled by Lord Belstead. It is made of wrought iron. There are four themes on the sign, the golden sun at the top shining on the old school house on the left and the church of St Mary on the right. Beneath the buildings is a cut out of a farmer with a horse drawn plough from yesteryear.

The Name and Population
The village was called Bel(e)steda in 1086. The name could mean "Place of the funeral pyre" or "place in a glade" or "at a patch of dry land". The population was 202 at the 2011 census.

Other Points of Interest
The church of St Mary has an offset tower to the south of the nave.

The church was made redundant in 2005 and is now looked after by the community.
