Bradfield St Clare
The Sign
The sign was erected to celebrate the Millennium, made of wrought iron and depicts the church as the main theme with the arms of the St Clare family below. The base has also been used as a war memorial to the seven parishioners who have died.
The Name and Population
The population was 143 at the 2011 census. The name means "Broad open land". 'St Clare' is a later distinguishing affix, from ownership by the St Clare family, here since at least the 13th century, from Old English. It was called Bradfelda in the Domesday Book.
Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Clare.
It has been speculated that the field of Hellesden, which may be a corruption of Hagelisdon, within the parish, was the site of the martyrdom of St Edmund.
