Chillesford

The Sign
This sign is an odd one with the name carved out on the supporting wooden post. At the top of the post is the tower of the church. The top is made of metal, which has a couple of small items including two marsh harriers, made of bronze and a small shed-like building. The sign is located on the junction of the B1084 and Pedlars Lane. The sign was made by artists Freddie Morris and Laurence Edwards, possibly back in 2016, which took two years to make.

The Name and Population
It was called Cesefortda in 1086 and Chiselford  in 1211. The name means "The gravel ford", from Old English; it is probably the ford at the Butley River. The population at the 2011 census was 383, which included Butley and Wantisden.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Peter, with the tower being made of local Red Crag bricks, unusual for East Anglia.
