Farnham

The Sign
The sign has three main subjects, including: the church of St Mary at the top, now also serving Stratford St Andrew, where the church is now in private hands. Two horses pulling a man handled plough in the old traditional way and ferns at the base, suggesting a link with the village name.

The signs sits on the busy A12, not too far from the Stratford St Andrew village sign. The sign was erected in 2008 and is made of wrought iron. The name is shown vertically on the post.

The Name and Population
Known as Farnham or Ferneham in 1086 and then Farnham in 1291. The name means the "Homestead or enclosure where ferns grow", from Old English; the same as the village in Essex. The population was only 118 at the 2011 census; the population has been falling since 1801.

Other Points of Interest
St Mary's church dates back to Norman times, with a Roman camp before this, on top of the hill.
