Henley

Old sign on top of village noticeboard

Present Sign - 2010

The Sign
The village has two signs, both at the same location, give or take a few yards at the corner of Church Lane, where five roads meet. The sign on top of the notice board may not be a village sign to some, but it has the village name, date of erection (1977) and the cross keys symbol for the church of St Peter, so why not. It was made by Staines and Golding of Needham Market.

The newer sign was erected in 2010 and made by Signs of the Times. It is divided into four sections separated by the cross keys of St Peter:

  • Top segment - the church of St Peter
  • Bottom segment - a family outing in the countryside
  • Left segment - village community centre
  • Right segment - the village school

The Name and Population
The population was 573 at the 2011 census. It was called Henle(i)a / leie in the Domesday Book. The name means "High woodland clearing" from Old English.
