The Sign
There are two village signs in the village. The older sign was erected in April 2001 to commemorate the Millennium and unveiled by Councillor Morris Rose. The second sign was erected in 2003 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Both signs are made of wrought iron. The early sign depicts early agriculture with horse and man driven plough over the top or modern agriculture with the tractor; the later sign shows the traction engine which was used in between the two techniques. The later sign has a stack of either corn or wheat in the centre of the date.

The Name and Population
The population was 160 at the 2011 census. It was called Elcheteshala / Ilchet(el)eshala in the Domesday Book. The name means "Ylfketill's nook of land", from Old Norse and Anglian. St Margaret added later.
