Kelsale cum Carlton

The Sign
The sign depicts the 8 bells in Kelsale church and a grape vine representing the vineyard established within the grounds of The Old Manor House in 1967, now closed down. Carlton St Peter & St Mary amalgamated with Kelsale many years ago. Kelsale is also included on a combined sign on Carlton Park playing field. It was erected to commemorate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, having been made by J.T.Pegg & Sons of Leiston.

The Name and Population
The village had several variations in 1086: Cara- / Kereshalla / Cheres(s)ala / Chylesheala / Keles- / Kireshala and Keleshale in 1254. The name means "The nook of land or hollow of a man called Celi / Ceol" from Old English. The population was 990 in 2019.

Other Points of Interest
The church at Kelsale is dedicated to St Mary and St Peter. The church at Carlton is dedicated to St Peter and only open in the summer months and December for funerals, baptism and weddings.
