The Sign
The old sign depicts the church of St Margaret only, the new one a wrought iron silhouette type sign portraying the church of St Margaret at the top surrounded by trees, with the nearby moat being portrayed below at Moat Lodge. The very top of the sign as a sheaf of corn. A small village in a very rural setting.

The Name and Population
The population is probably less than 70. The name means "South wood" from Old English. The name is shown as Southold on the 1610 map of John Speed.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Margaret and was made redundant in the 1970's and bought by the village. The tower has gone replaced with a belcote.
