Sternfield

The Sign
The sign is quite simple showing the leaves and "conkers" from the horse chestnut tree, which I assume are many in the surrounding parish. It is made of wrought iron.

The Name and Population
Called Sternesfelda/Sterne(s)fella  in 1086 and Sternefeld in 1235. The name possibly means "The open land of a man called Sterni from Old English. The village is scattered and small with a population of 132 in 2011.

Other Points of Interest
The church is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene.

Colonel Sir Eric and Lady Penn lived at Sternfield House and was the controller of the Lord Chamberlains Office and a regular at Buckingham Palace in the 1960's and 70's; many of the royal family have stayed here.
