Sudbury
The Sign
The town sign is in the form of a pennant hanging from the Armada Commemorative Beacon. It was erected in 1988 and stands on the green near to the Catholic church. It commemorates the 400th anniversary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
The principal feature is the talbot, or hound, in the arms and crest, which is taken from the arms of the Sudberry family, particularly Simon of Sudbury, who was Bishop of London, Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of England in the 14th-century. The lion and fleur-de-lis represent the royal associations with the town.
The Name and Population
The population of the town at the 2011 census was 13,063. It was called Sudberia / Sutberie(a) in the Domeday Book. The name means "Southern Stronghold", from Old English.
