The Sign
The sign depicts two buildings, The Samford House of Industry built in 1764 at the top and the church of St Mary below. The signs sits opposite the church. The wavy lines at the bottom represent Alton reservoir, with the whole sign having a shining sun backdrop. The plaque recalls that the sign was erected in 2001 attributed to Denny Driver, a man of the village.

The Name and Population
The population was 540 at the 2011 census. Known as Tati(s)tuna in 1086. The name probably means "Tating's farm/settlement" from Old English.

Other Points of Interest
Samford House was a workhouse from 1766-1930 and then used as St Mary's hospital until 1991 and then redeveloped for housing.

Bernard Oliver's body was found in two suitcases in 1967; the murder was never solved.
